This year’s edition of Wimbledon is upon us, and the bracket is sure to be filled with upsets, so I am going to get right into it. (If you would like to watch my predictions on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAVf9MDfLww)
To start off, my champion is Roger Federer who will win his 19th grand slam and his 8th Wimbledon Championships. In the finals, I think he will play Marin Cilic, who will have an extremely tough road en route to the championship match, but as seen in the past few weeks, he is playing some amazing tennis. Cilic will have to fend off Nadal and Murray to reach Fed, but I think he can do it.
Below are my predictions for each of the eight octets.Andy Murray could be upset in these early rounds, but I believe he will not be defeated. The NextGen star, Denis Shapovalov, will win his first round match, but then lose to the rising Lucas Pouille. Nick Kyrgios is always an unknown variable, so I have him being ousted in the third round.
I think that Stan Wawrinka will make it out of this section alive, but he will have to face some fierce opponents like Daniil Medvedev, Verdasco, and Querrey. The latter of those three will reach the last 16 by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In this part of the draw, there are two grass court players, Muller and Karlovic, who will most likely have a rematch against each other in the third round. But, despite Gilles Muller playing some amazing tennis I believe that Rafael Nadal will reach the quarters nonetheless.I have Marin Cilic barely surviving this section on multiple occasions, namely against Mayer and Johnson, who both play their best tennis on the grass. Furthermore, Nishikori will battle it out against Cilic after what I think will be a great match vs. Roberto Bautista Agut. Here, Milos Raonic, last year’s finalist, will be ousted by NextGen star Sascha Zverev who had an impressive run to the finals of Halle (500) two weeks ago. Moreover, another NextGen player, Frances Tiafoe, will reach the second round of Wimbledon for the first time ever. For this section of the draw, I think it is pretty much unanimously agreed that Roger Federer will make it out alive after rebounding from a surprise loss to Tommy Haas and winning Halle. I also have the Aussie, Bernard Tomic, reaching the third round after upsetting the 27 seed, Mischa Zverev, in the first round.I believe there will be a major upset in this octet at the expense of Dominic Thiem. I have Vasek Pospisil reaching the round of 16 and losing to Richard Gasquet who had an upset of his own, beating Tomas Berdych. After winning Eastbourne (250) this morning, Djokovic will look to make a run in this year’s edition of Wimbledon, but I predict that his winning will be stopped short when Feliciano Lopez comes around after defeating Gael Monfils.
The ATP World Tour has been incredible to watch with so many shocking upsets, and don’t worry because this is not going to end anytime soon.
